5 Things To Do At Wyndham Fairfield Mountains North Carolina
Written by Thomas B.
Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Mountains
Tucked away in the mountainous area of Lake Lure, North Carolina, staying at Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Mountains is like finding a ruby at one of the local gem mines—a treasure. This place is beautiful, adventurous, and fun. The area lends itself to more peaceful trades, such as photography, hiking, and cozying by a fireplace. But, don’t let the surrounding landscape fool you; Wyndham Fairfield Mountains is sure to offer plenty of excitement for all ages. Here are my top 5 recommendations during your trip.
Lake Lure Resort Activities: North Shore Beach Cabana
Lake Lure resort aquatic activities start here at the North Shore Beach Cabana. Put on a swimsuit and wade into Lake Lure to cool off. Hop in a kayak, pedal boat, or pontoon boat and go for a picturesque ride. If you have the proper permit(s), grab a rod and reel and try your hand at fishing. And when you are finished the whole family can grab an ice cream cone. Check all prices and requirements for rentals prior to travel! Fishing and boating laws vary by state, so make sure your family and friends are qualified.
Tripbound Insider Tip: For a truly unique experience, sign up for a Scenic Lake Cruise. By reservation only, these cruises take guests around Lake Lure with accompanying narration from the captain. The standard ride lasts an hour and a half, but travelers may book a lunch or dinner session for a longer, 2- to 3-hour excursion including food.
Wyndham Fairfield Mountains Has Two Golf Courses
There are not one, but two golf courses on-site at Wyndham Fairfield Mountains. Both are rated 4 stars by Golf Digest, providing high-quality fun and friendly competition to all guests. Apple Valley golf course measures 6,756 total yards, while Bald Mountain golf course comes in at 6,283. Respectively, the courses are rated 73.2 and 70.9 by the USGA.
And for those of us that have never swung a club these golf courses provide terrific ambiance. All units at this property come equipped with a balcony or patio, so viewing the manicured landscape is as easy as stepping outside. When combined with the lakes, rocks, and hills of the Blue Ridge, the country club vibes are felt throughout this resort. So whether you are teeing up at hole 7 or “tea-ing” up on your back porch you are sure to enjoy the stretching greens.
Tripbound Insider Tip: Would you like a free round of golf? Be sure to sign up for the birthday club here. By registering you will receive one free round on the house on your birthday, as well as all special promotions and events throughout the year.
Wyndham Legends Pub and Pizzeria & Lakeview Restaurant
Of course, all of the rentals at Wyndham Fairfield Mountains come with a kitchen, but sometimes you need a nice meal out. This resort makes it easy, because there are two restaurants on-site: Wyndham’s Legends Pub and Pizzeria and Lakeview Restaurant.
Legends offers a casual dining experience. Beers on tap, several HDTVs, and delicious pizza options make this one feel like a familiar bar and grille. With plenty of appetizers, salads, and sandwiches, the menu will cover almost anyone’s tastes. And if you are staying in a condo rental, Legends makes it easy to order food for carry-out if you would prefer to stay in.
Lakeview, on the other hand, offers a bit more elevated dining experience. As the name suggests, this restaurant comes equipped with a patio overlooking Lake Lure. Reservations are encouraged during more popular seasons. Many reviews recommend steak and seafood dishes, but there are also staple kid’s menu items such as chicken tenders and popcorn shrimp.
Tripbound Insider Tip: I suggest taking a look at the resort dining’s Facebook page to see pictures, hours, and reviews. Visitors can also view upcoming events and special occasions that might be of interest during their trip such as candlelight dinners, ½ off wine nights, and sports event viewings.
Touring The Historical Biltmore Estate In Asheville
Trust me, the hour drive is worth it for touring the historical estate. Located near Asheville, Biltmore is a historical estate belonging to members of the Vanderbilt family. The house is the largest privately-owned home in the United States, and contains 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms, and 250 rooms total. Each room is exquisitely furnished and decorated. Grand tapestries and paintings hang on the walls. Thousands of volumes line the shelves of the libraries. The grounds cover 8,000 acres containing a rose garden, bowling green, pools, statues, and water features. History, society, design, and entertainment come together perfectly in this attraction.
There are several ways to experience Biltmore. You can pay admission for a self-guided tour of the property. You can visit the winery on-site and go shopping at Antler Hill Village. There are restaurants and gift shops here, and right across the street from the entrance is the Historic Biltmore Village, which offers a variety of dining options, boutiques, and cafes.
Tripbound Insider Tip: Christmas is an especially popular time of year for visiting Biltmore for Candlelight Christmas Evenings. The house is decorated from head to toe in lights, wreaths, and presents, which provide guests with a true sense of merriment. Several of the rooms feature live musicians and choirs singing carols that travel through the corridors while visitors walk from room to room.
Be advised: some parts of the house may be difficult for individuals who have trouble climbing stairs. The floor plans to move from the ground floor to the upper floors, or to the basement, requires several flights of winding stairs.
Chimney Rock State Park Offers Amazing Views Of Lake Lure
For anyone who seeks truly inspiring natural wonders, you should add Chimney Rock to your list of destinations. Chimney Rock State Park offers amazing views of Lake Lure. There is nothing like standing at the top of a mountain overlook and viewing the horizon of a serene landscape, and the area surrounding Lake Lure is surely serene.
Take a short uphill drive to reach the base of the climb. There is currently only one way to reach the top: an intricate web of stairs. There is an elevator on-site, but it has been out of commission for a couple of years (be sure to contact the park prior to travel to inquire if it has been fixed). Along the way there are a couple of interesting stops to visit. Gneiss Cave contains a small platform for viewing a dark crevice home to several species of bats. Grotto and Subway offer low clearance walkways around Pulpit Rock, and Vista Rock is slightly lower than Chimney Rock, but the view is breathtaking, nonetheless. After taking a few breaks from the 499-step trek at each of these checkpoints, finish your tour by topping Chimney Rock. If you get lucky, a blanket of fog might fall on the rocks and you will feel like you are in the clouds.
Tripbound Insider Tip: Just past Chimney Rock is a gift shop and café called Sky Lounge. While this place is perfect for resting before descending, there is also a clever feature for hikers to share with their loved ones: a live stream! There is a video camera mounted on the side of the building that your friends and family can connect to by visiting http://www.chimneyrockpark.com/live-webcam/.
Wyndham Resort At Fairfield Mountains Floor Plans
The Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Mountains floor plans consists of 1 and 2 bedroom suites with a full kitchen. The 2 bedroom suites have 2 baths. The balcony/deck is a great place to sit back and relax. A visit to Wyndham Resort at Fairfield Mountains has something for everyone: swimming, golfing, dining, shopping, hiking, and much more. I am sure guests of all ages can enjoy the beauty and entertainment that North Carolina offers. The mountains, the water, the elevation, the foliage—all of it lends itself to the benefit of all visitors. Bring your children. Bring your friends. Bring your significant other or your grandparents. Lake Lure truly is a jewel in Appalachia.
(I should point out that many of the outdoor activities are seasonal at this Lake Lure resort. The lake, outdoor pools, and golf courses are much more enticing during warmer months. However, I did travel in the off-season and would do it again in a heartbeat. The walking and hiking trails are still open. Fairfield Mountains comes equipped with an indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna to warm up in the cooler months.)
