Top 5 Tuesday: El Dorado Resort and Spa, Riviera Maya
Top 5 Reasons to go to El Dorado Resort and Spa by our guest blogger Katie S.
Hi Everyone! I’m here to give you my Top 5 list for El Dorado Royale Resort and Spa in Riviera Maya. We were there December of 2012. Talk about a good place to spend some time…
1. It’s good for the soul!
There is just something about looking out into the depths of a gorgeous blue ocean that is good for the soul. Now, look at that ocean with a bright blue sky above it sprinkled with soft white clouds and feel the warmth of the sun on your face and just take a deep breath. The air has the telltale scent of vacation; salt and sunblock. It smells like summer, all year round at El Dorado. With soft sand, and an average temperature of 88 degrees from May to October you can sink into a state of relaxation while your stress melts away. That is good for any soul! There are plenty of beach chairs, covered cabanas and even your own private patio for soaking up some vitamin D! Just be sure to wear sunblock!
2. No kids.
This has nothing to do with not liking kids. I love kids, especially my own but vacationing with kids around, yours or not, is slightly less relaxing than vacationing without kids around! No one is splashing in the pool or the hot tub, no tantrums (as long as the bar stays stocked) and nobody to chase after all day long. There is a cool vibe of grown ups getting to be the ones to be catered to for a change and a deep appreciation for it! The restaurants are nice and quiet and nobody is judging you for having a drink with breakfast, for second breakfast and again at lunch. Try that with kids in tow! If you do want to bring kids, Karisma has a resort for that, check with Tripbound for more information.
3. Speaking of eating and drinking…it’s all included. Fabulously all included.
At La Isla, our favorite second breakfast spot (we would get smoothies and coffee before hitting the gym) there is the most amazing Mimosa and Bloody Mary bar, not to mention a fabulous fresh breakfast buffet and a la carte menu items. The waitstaff is amazing!! They will see what you are drinking, how you like it and just keep bringing them! The food is fresh and plentiful and there are 7 restaurants to choose from! Italian, Asian fusion, seafood, Mexican fusion, Tex/Mex…you can’t go wrong. None of the restaurants require reservations which allows flexibility on your schedule. If you’re not done with the pool or beach…stay longer and hit the restaurants when you are ready! If you go to Kampai, the Asian Fusion Restaurant, get the soups, everyone of them was amazing!!
There are bars scattered throughout the resort. There are swim up bars attached to lazy rivers, bars in the restaurants, stand alone bars…and it’s all included! There is a drink of the day, and it’s your duty to try one of these drinks everyday! They’re pretty good. And pretty. And girly…but it’s vacation, and you’ve paid for it, so go ahead and have the girly blue drink and enjoy it. Then go back and get another! Another thing that I thought was AWESOME was El Dorado has cabana men and women who stroll by on a bike with a cooler, or a push cart that is a cooler filled with ice cream, popsicles, fresh fruit, and in basket sunblock incase you need a touchup and some books and magazines. How great is that?! Picture it…you are sunbathing and someone happens by with a snack. Then again later with some cold water and popsicles and sunblock. And when you need to get up and stretch your legs, you hit the swim up pool bar where there are amazing drinks and usually some snacks there too. I like snacks.
4. Now, the staff as I mentioned is amazing.
I’ve really never seen such a group of happy individuals. Whether it’s the maintenance crew outside who stop what they are doing when you walk by to say hello, a cabana staff member or a waiter at any of the restaurants remembering what you like to drink or order…everyone has a fantastic smile! Because it’s all inclusive (hooray again!), there’s no tipping. The staff knows you aren’t supposed to tip, and we definitely tipped a little extra to some of the people who were really good to us, but truly, what a friendly group of individuals. They genuinely seem to be happy to be at work, and happy to be helping you. The housekeeping staff also did a great job, we were honeymooning and came back one evening after dinner on the beach to a bathtub filled up with bubbles, and rose petal and a rose petal heart on our bed. There are towel animals everyday too. Somehow no matter how old you are, towel animals make you smile!
5. And for my number 5, the spa!
We did a few different spa treatments and used the fitness center and their facilities like the saunas and showers. But one of the coolest things we did was a couples massage overlooking the water in a raised cabana. Sigh…it was a scene out of a movie! To begin the massage, we started at the actual spa where we did a Healing Waters treatment. You begin by soaking in a hot tub for five minutes, after which you move to a cold pool, I’m talking cold. I’m talking I am never ever doing that again in my life cold, like 50 degrees (I’m a huge baby, and YOU should totally do this, it’s absolutely worth it!!!) You jump in and dip your whole body in. All the way down…no cheating!! Then you get out as fast as humanly possible and head into a indoor pool that is in the 70 degree range, which feels like heaven after that cold dip! In the pool there are seven different stations you go to with jets in different places to hit specific parts of your body; your calves, your back, your neck…you get the idea. I’m telling you, this was such a cool experience! You begin this about an hour before your massage so you can take your time and relax through it. After the pool stations we got out and sat in lounge chairs with some fresh fruit and aqua fresca. (Ah… I could go for some aqua fresca. They have two different flavors everyday, they take a fruit like watermelon or papaya or cucumber and puree it, then mix it with water. It’s so incredibly refreshing!) A golf cart came to pick us up in our fluffy robes and sunglasses and took us to our second story open cabana where we looked out at the ocean while enjoying our massages. Pretty amazing.
These are my top five. There is easily another five, which could include the champagne bar, the excursions, the lazy river connecting the rooms to the swim up pools or the private outdoor shower (don’t even get me started on how great a private outdoor shower is)…but a quick glance at some pictures of the resort will probably sell you on it! As I mentioned, we honeymooned there, and I would do it again!
