Top 5 Tuesday: Escape the Cold at Wyndham St. Thomas

Posted by Carrie in Caribbean, Top 5

When there’s a chill in the air, you might get to daydreaming of warmer weather at a tropical destination. Well, let the new Margaritaville Vacation Club – Wyndham St. Thomas be your destination of choice.

Located on Water Bay at the eastern end of St. Thomas, and inspired by Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville®, it’s your perfect escape whether you’re looking for a sense of adventure or a more laid-back experience. You may never want to leave the resort with its outdoor pool, hot tub, 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, and Margaritaville Restaurant!

But, if you do want to venture out (which we highly recommend!), there’s plenty to explore in St. Thomas. Think water sports, shopping, tee time on the green, boating, and more. Use Wyndham St. Thomas as your springboard to island fun.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Downtown Charlotte Amalie, 10best.com

This should be high up on your list during your time in beautiful St. Thomas—it was named one of the top 10 shopping areas in the world. Yes… I said world! Take a break from fun in the sun to shop duty-free in.

This is where you’ll find an area called Vendors Plaza, where merchants set out to sell an array of souvenirs for you to take home—silver jewelry, t-shirts, tropical print wrap skirts, watches, trinkets, and more. Get your hair braided or grab some sweet treats while perusing through the plaza. This shopping location is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., mostly on days when cruise ships are in port. Tip: bring cash and be prepared to bargain!

Hit the Links

Mahogany Run Golf Club, TheVirginIslands.com

Looking to book a tee time on the links during your getaway? Mahogany Run Golf Course, one of the Caribbean’s top courses, is your go-to. The course encompasses 110 acres on the picturesque North shore of St. Thomas, where celebrities (Michael Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, and John Travolta to name a few) have been spotted tackling the difficult holes. Once you make your way to holes 13th-15th, you’ve hit “Devil’s Triangle”—cliff-side trio holes next to the Atlantic Ocean, which are a beautiful challenge. Leave with bragging rights and a certificate if you play all three without a penalty stroke!

*Mahogany Run is open to the public, and quality rental clubs are available.

Get Your Sea Legs

Escape the crowds and explore the calm Caribbean waters for a day sail. Doing so will give you the welcomed opportunity to bask in the warm sunshine as you tour quaint and quiet coves, and even jump into the clear turquoise waters for some snorkeling. Many sailing boats hold a maximum of six passengers, but if you’re traveling with a larger group, there are larger boats available.

And if you’re looking for another activity to get you out on the water, fishing is an option for both novice and seasoned anglers alike! While offshore, try your luck at reeling in Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, Tuna, or Wahoo, but onshore, you might find Barracuda, Kingfish, Jacks, or Yellowtail Snapper.

Explore Popular Landmarks

  • Blackbeard's Castle, commons.wikimedia.org

First, set your sights on the 99 Steps of Charlotte Amalie for a great view of the Caribbean. Made out of bricks once used as support for Danish and British Ships, these steps keep the orderly grid of the city intact, and lead you to Blackbeard’s Castle.

Speaking of Blackbeard’s Castle…the landmark’s park is known as “The Williamsburg of the Caribbean.” Between October and May, you can access the area where history comes alive, and legend has it pirate Edward Teach used the castle as a lookout for bootlegging purposes.

And be sure to make your way to Magens Bay Beach. It’s a popular, one-mile stretch hotspot where the crystalline waters are calm and the sand is white as snow. Swim, relax, and soak in the Caribbean sun, or take on some watersports—rent a paddle boat, kayak, or sunfish sailboat. If your stomach starts to rumble, walk over to the beach concession stand, which serves burgers, pizza, and other goodies to satisfy you for the afternoon. Tip: the beach and facilities are maintained by an entry fee charged to each guest over 12 years of age.

Check One (or Two!) Adventures off the Bucket List

Underwater Scooters! carnival.com

Toying around with the thought of going scuba diving or even skydiving? Vacationing in St. Thomas is your opportunity to take action.

For an outside-the-box vacation experience above the waters, take in stunning panorama views of the Caribbean, while skydiving at 10,000 feet with Skydive Virgin Islands! Go ahead and take that leap of faith out of the plane and spend 40 seconds in a 120-mph free-fall.

But if you’d prefer to dive into the tranquil waters instead, go on a guided scuba adventure. You’ll be swimming with the fish while exploring the reefs and wrecks. No diving experience? You’re in luck! Rent an underwater submersible scooter to still get a chance to enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean.

Reserve your getaway to Wyndham St. Thomas today for savings and potential memories you can’t pass up!
