Experience Boho Beach Charm: 5 Favorite Things to Do in Tulum, Mexico
Google Tulum, Mexico and you’ll probably see gossip magazine articles pop up in your search of celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon, and Cameron Diaz vacationing in the area. So, while it may seem as if this hotspot is only for the rich and famous and you’ll admire it from afar on your travel bucket list—year after year—I’m here to tell you otherwise.
The family and I escaped to this eco-conscious, ancient Mayan city for a laid-back, affordable, yet still incredibly chic getaway after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and we were seriously in awe of this tropical treasure.
It screams boho-chic thanks to bikes with baskets versus cars buzzing by, coconut-filled drinks versus heavy-on-the-juice adult beverages, spa and yoga retreats versus adventure junkie activities, and rustic thatch-roofed cabanas versus sizeable modern resort suites.
I will leave this disclose here before I get to the good stuff, however: dreaming of a couples vacay? Stay at Casa Pueblo. That’s because there are no kids clubs or family-friendly amenities. But, there’s still a quality dose of authentic Mexican culture and long, picture-perfect days on the beach.
So, if you want to travel with kids in tow, you’ll find your home away from home at Dreams Tulum Resort & Spa and can take a day trip to this holistic hospitality experience!
Now, onto the good stuff—five favorite things to do during your vacation to Tulum. Enjoy!
1. Trek the Town by Bike
Rental car? No thanks. Bikes are the most popular (and preferred!) way to get around town. That said, do as the locals do! Hop on a rental bike (Kelly Bike Rental is a popular choice) and cruise through the heart of Tulum—down to the Mayan ruins (which serves up some pretty spectacular beach spots near the viewpoints!) on a bike path dotted with taco stands and bars along the way.
Tripbound Tip: Be sure to schedule hitting the pedals for first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds (and the midday heat wave!). Many spots along your preferred route will most likely get crazy crowded.
2. Stroll Along the Beach
The water and beaches here are divine! Your chances of spotting rustic beach bungalows all along the ocean are pretty high. And, remember when I mentioned just a bit ago that the Mayan ruins serve up some pretty spectacular beach spots near the viewpoints? Well, they do.
Again, because this is another popular area, it’s bound to get packed with paradise lovers! But, it’s well worth it for the ambiance and amenities. Best of all, local artisans trying to run their businesses on the sand will sell anything but cheesy souvenirs (yes!).
Oh, and during your long stroll, stop by the beachfront Amansala Yoga & Wellness Resort. Here, you can cool off with a fresh watermelon cocktail (um, yum!) and a quick dip in the barside pool.
As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also discover “pop-up” palapas along the way with some of the best-priced massages you can find! You sure can’t go wrong with treating yourself to a $40 tension release.
3. Satisfy Your Mildly Adventurous Side
Looking for a slight change of pace? If you’re feeling energized after a day of rest and relaxation in the sand and sun, travel 25 minutes away from your accommodations to none other than Akumal Beach—aka the “Place of Turtles.”
LocoGringo.com shares a fun story about this on its website:
“Long before the city of Akumal was populated, large sea turtles chose its inviting shoreline as their home and nesting ground. The turtles knew from the beginning that this tropical paradise—with its sugary white beaches and beautiful bays—was heaven. Writer, archaeologist and businessman Pablo Bush Romero confirmed that the Akumal beaches were heavenly, which encouraged the growth of this seaside town.”
So, what can you do to satisfy your mildly adventurous side? Swim and snorkel with the legendary sea turtles! Tours are offered, which take visitors out in groups for a quick three-minute swim from shore out to the turtles. Once you’re finished, kick back and relax on the spacious beach, and even hit up Lol-Ha bar and restaurant if you want to linger a little longer!
4. Dine at a Popular Local Restaurant
Open-air restaurants to savor good food and warm tropical breezes? Sign me up! I highly recommend you have lunch at MINA Tulum. For starters, Travel + Leisure has some good things to say about it. Not to mention, the pork tacos are delicious. But, topping them off with a coconut mojito (and burning cinnamon stick garnish) makes it even better!
And, because this restaurant is on hotel property—Maria del Mar Hotel—you can even sit out back with your toes in the sand while your kids swim around in the pool and play on the beach. Our daughter Mallory did just that while my husband and I slowly sipped on our cocktails and enjoyed uninterrupted conversation.
5. Sip on a Cocktail at Coco Beach Club
Last but certainly not least on the list is Coco Tulum Hotel Beach Club. You can spend the whole day here or make a quick visit to grab a cocktail (the Passion Fruit Daiquiri has my vote!) at this Pinterest-perfect spot with swings, lounge chairs, and beautiful sandy beach views.
It’s also become such an Instagram-worthy spot that it even has a white frame you can stand behind for unforgettable snapshots of your time here!
It’s obvious why I would have major withdrawals from this place, and I know you will too as soon as you call this your vacay spot. It’s filled with boho beach charm you’ll remember for many years to come!
