4 of the Best Educational Family Vacations
Summer is almost here, and that means deciding where to go for your family vacation. Amusement parks and island getaways are great for leaving your worries behind, for sure, but some families get their kicks by enriching their minds. For those of us who like a side of culture with our summer vacation, here are four destinations that boast family fun you can learn from.
Frommer’s, Travel & Leisure, and Afar all named Nashville among the top places to visit in 2017. Dubbed “Music City,” this southern gem is a slice of Country music history. Visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which celebrates its 50th birthday this year, or head to RCA Studio B, the famous recording studio where Elvis recorded more than 200 songs. Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins, Eddy Arnold, and many more recorded classic hits here. While you’re town, down miss the 200-acre Nashville Zoo, and check out the city’s vibrant art scene.
Located near Asheville, North Carolina—home to a renowned art and food scene—you’ll find breathtaking views and historic landmarks at every turn. Start at the Biltmore House, George Vanderbilt’s 250-room chateau completed in 1895, and its beautiful gardens and grounds, which were designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Take a cruise down Blue Ridge Parkway, a meandering 469-mile route through the Appalachian Highlands, and stop along the way to witness the protected diversity of plants and animals. Chimney Rock Park is home to Chimney Rock, a 535-million-year-old monolith from atop which you can take in a 75-mile panoramic view of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure.
The charming town of Windsor is located in Sonoma County, putting you smack dab in the middle of wine country. More than 55 miles of dramatic Pacific coast create Sonoma County’s western border, which comprises regional parks, beaches, and coastal bluffs. Whether you’re a tree hugger or not, you’ll simply fall in love with the redwoods of Sonoma County. Coast redwoods, or Sequoia sempervirens, are the tallest living things in the world, with some extending beyond 370 feet. And the whole family will enjoy Safari West, an African adventure in the heart of California wine country.
Take a step back in time to the very beginnings of our nation, when colonists first stepped foot onto the grounds of Virginia’s Tidewater area! Try on the shoes of the settlers in Colonial Williamsburg,or visit the historic outside sites of Jamestown settlement and Yorktown battlefield.
