Day-long beach parties, backyard barbecues, and live music are just a few of the activities Americans look forward to when summer rolls around. On the 4th of July, you’ll find our countrymen coming together to participate in these pastimes, parade their patriotism, and celebrate the birthday of the good ole U.S. of A. While many cities have their fair share of afternoon parades or fireworks displays, there are only a few 4th festivities worth traveling for. This Tuesday, Tripbound salutes our nation with the Top 5 4th of July Celebration Destinations.

Top 5: 4th of July Celebration Destinations

Cape Cod, Massachusetts:

The sand dunes and salty air of the Massachusetts Shore will have you humming the “Star Spangled Banner” all day long.  With dozens of parades, picnics, and fairs, Cape Cod and its neighboring islands are a  renowned retreat for family fun on the 4th.

Chicago, Illinois:

Summer ballgames and Chicago-area bands make the “Windy City” the place to be for a holiday hurrah. Of course, no 4th of July would be complete without a colorful display of fireworks. The most elaborate extravaganza is set to patriotic tunes and lights up the sky over Navy Pier, the prime location for spectacular, skyline views along Lake Michigan.

San Diego, California:

From beach barbecue by day to fantastic fireworks by night, the sprawling shores of San Diego pack a party. Fun in the sun doesn’t stop after a day spent at Mission Bay Beach. When the sun goes down, expect a performance from the floating bay barges as they shoot fireworks into the Pacific.

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands:

Imagine celebrating Independence Day with refreshing rum punch, instead of lukewarm beer. In the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas, the only thing lukewarm is the crystal blue waters. Forgo the burgers and barbecues of home for a holiday filled with palm trees and pina coladas.

Washington D.C.:

With the monuments honoring our founding fathers as the backdrop, what could be better than celebrating the nation’s birthday in its capital? All-American festivities such as the Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the National Mall and the National Independence Day Parade down Constitution Avenue will have you feeling more patriotic, and less political.
