The Top Five Reasons Why You Will Fall In Love With The Smoky Mountains
While summer is coming to an end, and you’re packing away your beach umbrellas and swim gear, you might think family vacations are off your radar for good—at least until next year.
For those of us who love the crisp fall air and beautiful colors of changing leaves, however, the best season to vacation is getting ready to begin. And, while there are countless reasons to travel to the Smoky Mountains during any time of year, there are five simple reasons why you’ll fall in love with visiting this area in the fall.
Ready to hear what those reasons are? Let’s jump right in!
1. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
There is no doubt fall foliage is best experienced in the mountains. So, it should come as no surprise that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is ranked high up on my list for the best place to take in the beauty of the mountain landscape during this time of year. Reason being, beautiful hiking trails are accessible to both expert hikers and families.
Curious about my top picks when it comes to hiking trails in the area to set your sights on all the beauty?
Not a hiker? No worries. There are beautiful scenic drives you can venture on so you can stay within the comforts of your car. If you choose this route, be sure to take the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail through the rich forests and creeks.
This road is perfectly named as it is designed for leisurely travel and enjoyment of nature.
Who doesn’t love visiting theme parks during cooler months of the year? There’s no heat, humidity, or crazy crowds and long lines. And, Dollywood’s family theme park does not disappoint when it comes to fall fun.
From late September to early November, park guests can visit for an unforgettable time at the annual Harvest Festival. Pumpkin carvers from around the world come to show off their fantastic skills. And, at night, the Great Pumpkin LumiNights features artistic pumpkin sculptures and family-friendly (non-spooky) fun.
Also, in addition to the pumpkin fun is four weeks full of southern music concerts, which is FREE with your park admission.
3. Oktoberfest at Ober Gatlinburg
Do you love a good Oktoberfest? Well, you’re in luck! What better way to spend the German holiday than in Ober Gatlinburg? For four weeks, from late September to late October, you can celebrate all the much-loved traditions from the original Oktoberfest located in Munich, Germany.
While there are activities for all ages, the food and beer tend to be the highlights. My mouth is watering just thinking about all the options—from schnitzel to bratwurst, strudel, pretzels, and sauerkraut.
Are you hungry yet?
Then, when you’ve had your fill, wash it all down at the outdoor Bier Garten for beer sampling for all festival attendees 21 and up.
4. Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival
If you haven’t gathered already, the Smoky Mountain area sure knows fall is the best time of the year to visit, and they make sure to celebrate the season to the fullest.
And, that explains why the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival is celebrated daily throughout the area from mid-September to early November.
The towns of the Smoky Mountains (Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg) go all out with autumn-themed decorations, events, entertainment, and craft exhibits during this special time.
5. Apple Barn and Cider Mill
Nothing says fall like fresh, crisp apples and hot cider! So, my family’s pick for delicious fall favorites is none other than the Apple Barn and Cider Mill.
If you stop by for a visit, be sure to dine at the on-site restaurant, Applewood Farmhouse, for complimentary apple fritters and fresh apple juice. The menu features all the traditional southern homestyle dishes including chicken and dumplings, country fried chicken, and fresh apple cobbler.
Also, located just steps away is the Apple Barn Winery, which offers complimentary wine tastings (for guests 21+) of its, yes, famous apple wines. And, no trip is complete without a tour of the vineyard and orchard. Just don’t go home without purchasing some apples from the General Store!
Now, are you starting to dream of a magical fall family vacation to the Smoky Mountains? With the vibrant autumn-colored treetops as a backdrop, it’s easy to see why this season is a special time of year.
Whether you’re looking for a relaxing, quiet mountain getaway or an experience that’s filled with seasonal festivities, the Smoky Mountains are guaranteed to offer a memorable trip for visitors of all ages this fall season.
