Top 5 Family Activities & Attractions in Myrtle Beach, SC
Well, yeah–obviously. We know you came down to Myrtle Beach to get out and enjoy some time in the surf and sand. Most likely your hotel along the Grand Strand offers some sort of beachfront access. Plus come busy season, the popular beaches will be just that, making for a crowed, backward hat experience. With dozens of beaches and literally hundreds of access points, choosing the best beaches can be hard. Some of the best spots along the 60-mile Grand Strand stretch can be found here. Check out Pawleys Island for unspoiled sands, relaxed atmosphere, and crowd free 4-mile beachfront. Surfside Beach is known by locals as “The Family Beach”, so how about that for foreshadowing. Surfside is one of the most meticulously maintained stretches of beach in the area, and thanks to an inviting smoke free enviroment, it’s the perfect place for the whole family to enjoy all the beach has to offer. The Surfside Pier is also a popular place to take a stroll. Cherry Grove in North Myrtle Beach combines clean beaches, a two-story pier locally revered by fisherman and beach goers alike, and postcard worthy scenic areas.
A nice contrast to that relaxing family beach day is a trip to one of Myrtle Beach’s many waterparks. Add some thrills to you water play day at the areas three exciting waterparks. Myrtle Waves Water Park is South Carolina’s largest waterpark and offers thrill inducing rides, enormous pools, and the laziest of rivers. Wild Water & Wheels in Surfside boasts numerous speeding flume rides, while, those looking to stay dry(er) will love the bumper boats, go-karts, and mini golf. Splashes Oceanfront Water Park brings the action right to the beach with coiled water slides and many other rides geared for your children.
Gives those bathing suits a much-needed break when you explore the abundant adventure of the area’s amusement parks. At Ocean Drive Pavilion, the nostalgia of a boardwalk venue blends with over 25 rides and attractions, including a 6 story rollercoaster, restored Ferris Wheel, and kiddie land. The Family Kingdom Amusement Park features seaside entertainment for the whole family. Classic rides such as the Yo-Yo, Slingshot Drop, and Swamp Fox wooden rollercoaster generate thrills, while, children’s favorites such as bumper cars and mini coasters fill the kiddie land area. Looking for a different type of adventure? Then be sure to checkout Myrtle Beach Zipline Adventure and Soar + Explore Zip Line & Rope Course for some elevated fun. Have a need for speed? Then put the pedal to the metal on the go-kart course of the Broadway Grand Prix Family Race Park. Strap yourself into the Sling Shot ride at Myrtle Beach Thrill Rides, because who doesn’t dream about being tossed 300 ft. in the air like a helpless rag doll at speeds up to 120 mph? Two riders can ride at once, which is nice, because no one wants to die alone. The point is that adventure awaits, and it’s not too hard to find.
Fuel your family’s imagination at Myrtle Beach’s awesome lineup of museums that range from the truly wild to culturally significant. WonderWorks is touted as the “museum for the mind”. And with over 100 interactive exhibits, all housed in an innovative 50,000 sq. ft. space, it certainly fits the billing. Explore the ingeniously designed science experiments found throughout this topsy-turvy laboratory. You enjoyed an afternoon swimming in the ocean; now go to Ripley’s Aquarium and discover the horrible collection of sea creatures that were literally just under your feet. Get up close and personal with sea rays, or watch in terror as sharks swim directly overhead in tunnel aquarium. Ok, so maybe I hid in my room during shark week. In any event, this place is really one of a kind. The Hollywood Wax Museum stands out from the Myrtle Beach strip like King Kong on the side of a skyscraper, probably because there is an actual King Kong statue on the side of the museum. Pop culture icons of yesterday and today line the halls of this museum in all their waxy glory. Ok, it’s a little creepy, but the kids will love it–or be terrified. Sometimes you have to flip the coin.
Mini Golf Galore:
Throughout the Grand Strand region, there are over 30 putt putt courses waiting to be played. And these aren’t just those rinky-dink courses you find next to the local shake shop. Myrtle Beach’s selection of exciting, challenging, and just plain fun courses has garnered the city the nickname of “Mini Golf Capital of the World”. In fact, the mini golf here is so great that the US Pro Mini Golf Association calls Myrtle Beach home. Yup, that is a real thing. The association even holds their version of the yearly Masters here. That is also a real thing I did not make up. Ok, so maybe they take their putt putt a little too seriously down in these parts, but that doesn’t mean you have to. With courses designed for the whole family, no one will be left out of the fun. Explore the Dragon’s Lair, do battle with some Dinosaurs, or navigate treacherous Volcanoes, all while trying your best to keep it under par. The Hawaiian Rumble Golf Course is rated #1 in the entire world, by whoever rates mini golf courses I guess. So round up the group, and get out on those plastic greens.
