Wyndham Great Smokies Lodge & Water Park: Fun For Families
One of the biggest expenses of a family vacation is where to stay and what you’re going to do while you’re on vacation. So travel-loving families, I’m here to tell you there are places to stay that will give you the best of both worlds. Let me introduce you to one of my favorites, Wyndham Great Smokies Lodge in Sevierville, Tennessee. Here are my top five family & budget-friendly reasons to stay at this resort.
1. On-site Wyndham Gatlinburg Water Parks
That’s right! Wyndham Gatlinburg water parks right at the resort. Not only does this Wyndham resort feature an indoor water park, but there are also two outdoor water parks (open seasonally) for year-round fun! The biggest reason we chose to stay at Wyndham Great Smokies Lodge was knowing we could take full advantage of the indoor water park available at no additional fee.
As soon as you walk into the water park, you instantly see the fun through the eyes of a child. There are water slides, a wave pool, kiddie play area, giant water playground, hot tub, basketball hoops, and more just waiting for guests to explore.
Our kids (ages 2 & 5 at the time of visiting) especially loved playing bumper tubs in the giant wave pool and spending hours splashing in the water playground. And mom and dad? Well, we loved the outdoor hot tub with a beautiful view of the mountains.
Tripbound Traveler Tip: Because the Smoky Mountain water park is located inside the resort, depending on the building your unit is located, I highly recommend packing bathrobes to keep kids warm while transporting from the water park back to your suite.
2. Suite-Styled Room
I love these suite-styled rooms at this Smoky Mountain Resort. As soon as we walked into the door of our Two-Bedroom Deluxe Unit, we were pleasantly surprised to find the unit was huge!
Not only did we have enough room for all four of us, but we also had a full kitchen, living room, and balcony. Our kids were ecstatic to each get their own double-sized bed! Mom and dad were happy to have their own room and a king bed.
The washer and dryer was a lifesaver for washing and drying wet bathing suits as soon as we came back from the water parks and we returned home with suitcases full of clean clothes (a dream come true for a mama!).
Once we saw the size and accessibility of the full kitchen, we did a quick grocery run to Aldi (about 5 miles away) and stocked up for the week. (Worried about over-purchasing for groceries? The resort collects non-perishable food for the local food bank.)
We saved a ton of money by cooking breakfast, lunch, and many of our dinners inside the unit. My husband (the cook in the family) especially loved the functionality of the kitchen. The kids and I loved the pull-up bar area and the long kitchen table that could easily accommodate the 8 max occupancy. We were even able to utilize the large kitchen table to work on homework with our kindergartner.
Tripbound Traveler Tip: The resort provides sample sizes of laundry detergent, dish detergent, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, paper towels, and more. There’s no need to pack all that extra stuff. Traveling with small kids? Bring your own sippy cups, paper/plastic plates, and paper/plastic bowls as most of the dishes are glass.
If your kids LOVE to have FUN like mine do, this resort offers no shortage! There are lots of amenities at Wyndham Great Smokies Lodge. We spent many mornings of our trip enjoying all the amenities the resort had to offer.
Our kids LOVED the three-story indoor playground, which could be enjoyed by kids of any age. My two-year-old had a blast and my five-year-old loved climbing to the very top. It was very easy to keep an eye on the kids inside the indoor playground while my husband and I enjoyed freshly brewed coffee from the resorts “Mountain Marketplace.”
When the kids were ready to move onto the next fun activity, we enjoyed a few rounds of bowling, indoor mini golf, indoor laser tag, and played many games in the GIANT arcade room. The resort also offers on-site dining options including the “Thirsty Miner” where kids eat FREE for dinner!
It really doesn’t get much better than kids eat free on vacation. The resort even provides Wyndham guests with coupon books for arcade games, snacks, merchandise, and more!
Tripbound Traveler Tip: If you plan to spend a lot of time at the arcade, purchase an “ALL STAY” pass to get the most excitement for your buck. Playing multiple games can quickly add up, but giving your kids a pre-paid card helps not to overspend on your budget.
4. Beautiful Views of the Smoky Mountains
Beautiful views of the Smoky Mountains can easily be seen throughout the resort. Our unit was located on the golf side of the resort in the “Evergreen” building. This building overlooks the beautiful Sevierville Golf Course and the Smoky Mountains are not too far off in the background. Although this building is not attached to the one that houses the resort’s water park, we preferred this location.
We were able to take advantage of a beautiful fire pit located outside and enjoyed a very quiet stay. Our unit was located on the bottom level, and we never heard any other guests. We also took advantage of the on-site shuttle service, which picked us up from the front door and dropped us off right at the water park.
Tripbound Traveler Tip: When traveling to this property, there are two buildings for Wyndham units: “Evergreen” and “Belle Terre.” We enjoyed the quiet nature of the “Evergreen” building as it was not attached to the the Wilderness Hotel, which seemed rather noisy and loud. “Belle Terre” is attached to the water park building and requires almost a quarter-mile walk to the water park.
When taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains, there are several towns to choose from – Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg. Wyndham Vacation Resorts Great Smokies Lodge is located in Sevierville, Tennessee, which is the first town you drive into when arriving to the Smoky Mountains area.
This town is adorable, quaint, and easy-to-navigate. There are plenty of great restaurants including our favorite Applewood Farmhouse, which serves complimentary servings of Apple Fritters®, Homemade Apple Butter and Applewood Julep®, and a choice of their Homemade Farmhouse Soup served with every meal!
