How to Organize and Share Your Family Vacation Photos

Did you just return from the dreamiest of getaways with your family? Or, have you been daydreaming about that one you took way back when? No matter what, I’m sure you have plenty of vacation photos hanging around on your phone or camera just waiting for you to do something special with them.

You know, the ones you spent time editing or filtering to perfectly enhance the moment you captured your kid frolicking in the snow or sand, yourself chowing down on your new favorite dish at the restaurant you quickly became a regular of, or even the family posing in front of a tourist attraction.

Now, Aunt Maria or Grandpa Mike won’t stop pestering you to share those vacation snapshots with them. Argh. One other to-do on your list. Why can’t they just look on Facebook?! Anyway, I digress. The point is, it can be overwhelming to figure out how to organize and share your family vacation photos with your people.

And, that’s what brings me to the blog today—to share our tips and tricks to save you a heck of a lot of time and stress. Not to mention, you’ll quickly get added back to your family member’s list of favorites as soon as you let them in on all the fun, unforgettable moments you got on camera!

1. Make a plan & start small.

Want to display them? Create an album as a keepsake? Or, back them up on the “cloud” to make a decide what to do with them at a later date? Whatever your preference may be, make a plan and start small. After all, you may just be backlogged a few years, and are seriously hungry for some photo organization in your life.

But, don’t try to tackle the entire project all in one sitting. To follow our “start small” advice, choose a particular vacation, or even a favorite moment or memory, and focus on that first. When you work on one photo project at a time, it’ll make things much more manageable for you and allow you a solid foundation to work your way up.

2. Create a Dropbox account & get to uploading.

Dropbox is a file organization tool that almost seems like it was sent from heaven above. No, really. It makes all of your files and photos available from any computer or mobile device you and your family have access to. Therefore, it allows for a much easier way to share your vacation snapshots with your people (especially high-res photos!).

Now, you might be wondering why on earth I would suggest this over Google Drive. Well, because some people in the family might not even have a Google account. Yes, while not all hope is lost and you can still share with those outside of Google, it doesn’t offer an ideal situation.

So, let me lay it all out on the line for you as to Dropbox’s capabilities:

  • Desktop and mobile apps—make it even easier to transport your photos from your phone to your account! Plus, you won’t have to worry about that dreaded notification Apple sends you regarding your iCloud storage. And, in the future, anything you save to the Dropbox folder on your device will automatically get uploaded and synced to your account.
  • Favorite files to view on mobile—Dropbox offers a favorites feature in its mobile apps. All you need to do is find any photos you need to view offline, swipe to the right, and tap the star icon. The app will then download the photos to your mobile device, and you can view them anywhere (even when you’re offline!) from the Favorites menu in your Dropbox app.

  • Easy sharing capabilities—once you’ve uploaded your photos and are ready to share with your family, Dropbox makes it super easy for you. The quickest (and best) way to share images is via a folder you create (more on this in a bit!).

  • File requests—did you go on a family trip where Grandma or Aunt Maria was snapping photos as well? Get them all in one place with a file request.
  • Privacy & security—Dropbox goes to great lengths to keep your precious memories secured. You have the opportunity to control who can invite people to a shared folder, designate roles and permissions for members of a shared folder, and, not to mention, set up two-step verification to protect your account from unauthorized access.

Convinced, now? Well, what are you waiting for?! Get to uploading your travel photos ASAP. Pricing plans start off free (for 2GB of space) and go up to $19.99/month depending on your needs.

3. Use folders wisely.

So, you’re ready to get to uploading, but how can you ensure you stay as organized as possible when using a cloud-based file solution? That’s where creating descriptive folders come into play. After all, you’ll want to make sure that what you’re categorizing will be easy to find and accurate for all members of your family.

For example, a folder labeled “My Pictures From February” isn’t very descriptive. Thus, you’re forced to take the time to click on it and see what’s inside, versus a folder labeled “February 2018 Family Vacation to Orlando.” So, take the time to tackle this step. And, you’ll thank yourself in the long run!

4. Pick a tool to create a photo book or other home goods item.

Old school can be the best way to go! And, great tip about waiting until reprints are on sale. I love that, and thank you for sharing Marilyn.

Nice, but I actually print out about 200 photos and put them in an album. Old school but at least I can show others and send out some personal shots now and then. Seems everyone takes so many photos these days, but we never see any of them. I cherish the pics I get in the mail from my friends and love to see the kids as they grow up. PS. I wait till reprints are on sale at the local drug store and for about $25 – I have an irreplaceable memory I cherish.
