Walking past the half-timbered houses that line the quaint streets of Solvang, you might think you’ve somehow ended up in Copenhagen instead of Southern California. Founded in 1910 by Danish settlers looking to escape the harsh winters of the Midwest, Solvang is located in California’s much lauded wine producing region; the Santa Ynez Valley. The traces of those original settlers strongly remain in today’s Solvang. It’s quite evident in the uniquely “Danish Provincial” style architecture found throughout the town. Bethania Lutheran Church bears witness to its European architectural counterparts. The town also is home to a replica of the famous Little Mermaid statue found in Copenhagen. There is also a 1:3 scale replica of the very famous Rundetaarn (Round Tower) from Denmark as well. But perhaps the most enduring legacy of the Danes is found in the cuisine the city serves up today. Decadent Danish bakeries can be found throughout Solvang, baking traditional treats such as the light and airy Aebleskiver (think jam filled pancake ball) and the insanely tasty Drommekage (Dream Cake). Food lovers are also quite taken by the Frikadeller (meatballs) and Medisterpolse (sausages) that are such an integral part of Danish cuisine. Large Belgian horses pull the Solvang Trolley & Carriage, and provide a great way to see the many historical and cultural landmarks found here. The Santa Ynez Valley is known for producing some the finest wines in the world, specifically specializing in Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Embrace the old world charm only found in Solvang.
